One succe<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">ssfu<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">l a<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">pproach for delivering such information has been the development of essential variables for climate (<a id=\"xref-ref-1-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-1\">1<\/a>), oceans (<a id=\"xref-ref-2-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-2\">2<\/a>), biodiversity (<a id=\"xref-ref-3-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-3\">3<\/a>), and sustainable development goals (<a id=\"xref-ref-4-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-4\">4<\/a>) (ECVs, EOVs, EBVs, and ESDGVs, respectively). These efforts have improved consensus on terminology and identified essential sets of measurements for characterizing and monitoring changes on our planet. In doing so, they have advanced science and informed policy. As an important but largely unanticipated consequence, conceptualizing these variables has also given rise to discussions regarding data discovery, data access, and governance of research infrastructures. Such discussion<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">s <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">are vital to ensure effective storage, distribution, and use of data among management agencies, researchers, and policymakers (<a id=\"xref-ref-5-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-5\">5<\/a>, <a id=\"xref-ref-6-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-6\">6<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"F1\" class=\"fig pos-float type-figure  odd\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">\n<div class=\"highwire-figure\">\n<div class=\"fig-inline-img-wrapper\">\n<div class=\"fig-inline-img\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"p-5\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">Although the curre<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">nt essential variables frameworks account for the biosphere, atmosphere, and some aspects of the hydrosphere (<a id=\"xref-ref-1-2\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-1\">1<\/a><a id=\"xref-ref-2-2\" class=\"xref-down-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-2\">\u21d3<\/a><a id=\"xref-ref-3-2\" class=\"xref-down-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-3\">\u21d3<\/a>\u2013<a id=\"xref-ref-4-2\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-4\">4<\/a>), they largely overlook geodiversity\u2014the variety of abiotic features and processes of the land surface and subsurface (<a id=\"xref-ref-7-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-7\">7<\/a>). Analogous to biodiversity, geodiversity is important for the maintenance of ecosystem functioning and services (<a id=\"xref-ref-8-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-8\">8<\/a>), and areas high in geodiversity have been shown to<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"> support high biodiversity (<a id=\"xref-ref-9-1\" class=\"xref-bibr\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/33\/16155#ref-9\">9<\/a>). Thus, consideration of geodiversity is an important part of developing nature-based solutions to global environmental challenges and demands for natural resources, particularly in relatio<\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">n to human well-being and ecosystem functioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"p-6\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\">And yet, despite many facets of sustainable development being underpinned by access to geological assets, key elements of geodiversity are yet to be incorporated into policy documents and international conventions. We, therefore, propose essential geodiversity variables (EGVs) describing features and processes of Earth\u2019s abiotic surface and subsurface to advance science and sustainable stewardship, complementing the existing essential variables (<a class=\"in-nw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/lookup\/suppl\/doi:10.1073\/pnas.1911799116\/-\/DCSupplemental\">Table S2<\/a>).
