Approximately 800 million people live in the shadow of active volcanoes worldwide, and with growing populations, the likelihood of volcanic emergencies is increasing. Among all natural phenomena, volcanic eruptions are one of the most destructive and can cause extreme societal and economic impacts through loss of life and damage to critical infrastructure. Volcanoes produce multiple primary and secondary hazards, and therefore, it is fundamental to assess the vulnerability to volcanic hazards in order to try to mitigate the associated risk. The aim of this lecturer is two-fold. In the first part we will explore key concepts related to volcanic hazards and risk, while in the second part we will focus on several case studies to illustrate different methodologies and approaches to the assessment and management of volcanic hazards and risk.
