Abstract

Inland water bodies, in particular reservoirs, are peculiar living sensors in the weather/climate system of the Earth. Large and deep lakes have a significant impact on regional weather and climate. The Alqueva reservoir is the largest artificial reservoir in Western Europe. After if was established in 2004 it made significant changes in local environment and, particularly, in regional climate. The aim of our work was to trace these changes and assess the possible impacts of the reservoir. To achieve this, a series of numerical experiments with the Meso-NH atmospheric model were done. These experiments reveal how the lake affected daily air temperatures, fog formation, precipitation and evaporation, and show day and night lake breezes.
